Counselling

The service

Naz Project London's Counselling Service is a confidential and free short term counselling service for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) individuals, especially women, those living with HIV, and young people aged 18-25 years. We work with clients who are residents or working in London.

What can we offer our clients?

We offer counselling for a variety of issues related to sexual health and HIV that may be affecting your emotional well-being these could include:

  • New HIV diagnosis
  • Family/relationship issues
  • Sexual trauma
  • Domestic violence
  • Making healthy sexual choices or decisions
  • Peer pressure around sex

Clients with issues not related to our broad definition of sexual health will be referred onto a generic counselling service.

Broad definition:" Sexual health is an important part of physical and mental health. It is a key part of our identity as human beings. Essential elements are equitable relationships and sexual fulfillment [while avoiding] unintended pregnancy, illness or disease." Department of Health.

What's the benefit to you?

  • Free, weekly 50 minute counselling sessions lasting a maximum of twelve weeks with a counsellor.
  • Counselling from a variety of therapeutic models whereby issues of difference and diversity will also be embraced.
  • A safe, quiet, confidential and encouraging environment.

Your counsellor will listen patiently and attentively to you, enabling for your issue to be understood from your perspective. You will be supported to see things more clearly and possibly from a different perspective. Counselling provides you with an opportunity to reduce your confusion. It can also help you to address those negative patterns that cause you harm as well as give you space to see the vast array of choices that you have in your life. It does not involve giving advice or directing you to take a particular course of action. Your counsellor will not judge you; they will support you to make decisions for yourself that are right for you life.

How you can access our service?

Access to the counselling service is made by referral. You can refer yourself or be referred by a professional, e.g., GP, Social Worker, Project Worker. A Carer can also make a referral on your behalf.

After the referral has been made and the referral form has been completed, you will then be contacted to undertake an initial assessment. After the assessment has been completed you may be offered up to twelve sessions.

Please remember that clients with issues not related to our broad definition of sexual health will be referred onto a generic counselling service.
